Black culture has been known for its beauty and uniqueness in hairstyles. From the "fro" to hair wraps to braids, Black women use their hairstyles to express their individuality of who they are and to showcase the development of Black culture throughout time, an evolution which has led us to a moment when increasing numbers of Black women are taking on the natural beauty of their hair. But it's not without controversy. The topic of beauty, and particularly hair and hairstyles, in Black culture has been a topic of debate for years with roots that stretch to the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. Recent debates within the Black community have been focused on the link between hair and identity. After the launch of a brand new campaign, Shea Moisture (a Black-owned hair brand) has been in the middle of this debate. The company is committed to providing all hair types, including those with loose curls and kinky hair for its customers, specifically Black women. In the past, the company has been known for filling the beauty gap, normalizing and bringing more awareness to Black beauty, while also providing Black women with beauty products that otherwise could not be found through traditional stores. The company's most recent digital ad campaign caused outrage as it attempted to reach more people by involving Non Hispanic Whites (NHWs), but excluding their core Black audience. In particular, the ads appeared to ignore the history and social hardships Black women have experienced in association with hairstyles of black women when compared with other groups. To find out more details about community, you have to browse racial equity website. Like all topics that evokes strong reactions, one must look at hair and the culture of the Black society for context. There are many Black women were forced to wrap their hair for centuries due to social oppression, abuse and racial discrimination. For instance, prior to Emancipation of the slaves hair wraps were utilized as a symbol of oppression/social status, and also a method to Black women to be less attractive to their owners. Moving forward to the time when Black women joined the industrial workforce, many felt forced to follow a more aggressive practice when it came to hairstyles. Traditional Black hairstyles like dreadlocks are still restricted in some areas, industries, or workplaces. This could lead to termination. It is easy to see the influence hair has on Black culture and identity. Every woman has her own story , or "hair journey" that is often characterized by struggles dating back to childhood. As a Black woman I have had to face my own struggles with accepting my hair as it is are part of my cultural identity. My long, puffy, voluminous hair was a source of teasing as a child. My mom resolved to protect my curls from relaxing products or styling products. After going through this cycle into my junior year, I'd seen enough of the damage/effects these chemicals caused to my hair, and wanted to break free of my dependence of them. I embarked on a the journey to "go natural." The result was endless hours of styling, researching and trying new products, and countless hours in the salon to finally determine what was the most effective for my particular hair type. Looking back, it was the best choice I've ever made. It also coincided with a larger milestone in my life, feeling more confident and acceptance of who I was becoming. |
